I spent three decades in law enforcement. When I retired, I didn't stop thinking about how to protect people. I just changed the tools.
Why This Agency Exists
After 32 years in law enforcement, I retired and was raising my five children. My wife Maria, and I purchased a life policy when we were new parents in 1995. It wasn't something we thought about much. It was just something we'd done.
It was 27 years later and we received the bad news she was diagnosed with colon cancer. After a hard fought battle, she passed away, and I was left raising five kids on my own.
That policy didn't bring Maria back. But it gave my family financial stability at a moment when everything else was uncertain. It meant I didn't have to choose between grieving and keeping the lights on.
I started thinking about how many families don't have that. How many people mean to get around to it, assume it's too expensive, or don't fully understand what they're buying. I thought about the officers I'd worked with for decades: young, healthy, and who had spouses and kids and no real plan for what happens if they don't come home.
So I started talking to people. As head coach of the Whitmore Lake Wrestling Club, I'd bring it up with parents. I'd have the conversation with young couples. I kept it simple: here's what it costs, here's what it does, here's why it matters.
One family came back and told me my advice had convinced them to buy coverage. That was the moment I knew this was what I was supposed to be doing.
What We Built
I opened the Richard Barrett Insurance Agency in Whitmore Lake because I was quickly accepted into the community as a youth wrestling coach. Life insurance is where my personal mission started, and it remains the core of what we do. But I expanded into auto and home insurance because I saw how many people were under-insured, overpaying, or working with agents who stopped returning calls.
The agency operates out of a real office at 22 Barker Road. You can walk in. You can call and someone answers. All agents on staff are licensed. Quotes go out the same day in most cases.
